Key takeaways
5- Upload a schematic to the folder for the editor you use, and check the server version before loading it.
- Load the file with //schem load, then stand at the intended position and run //paste.
- Use //paste -a to skip air, or //rotate 90 to turn the loaded clipboard before pasting.
- Use //undo for a recent WorldEdit edit, but keep a backup because history is limited and per session.
- FAWE replaces WorldEdit, so do not install both together.
This guide is for server owners adding a lobby, arena or spawn from a schematic file. By the end, you will know where to upload it, how to load and position it, and what to check if the paste goes wrong.
Choose WorldEdit or FAWE
WorldEdit is an in-game map editor for selections, schematics, copy and paste, brushes and scripting. It runs on Bukkit based servers including Paper. Check its listing for a build that supports your Minecraft version, especially after updating the server.
FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) is a WorldEdit fork focused on faster edits and lower memory use. It keeps WorldEdit API compatibility. FAWE is a replacement for WorldEdit, so do not install both together. Its installation guide says versions 6.0.0 and higher need Java 17.
For an occasional lobby paste, either tool can do the job. Consider FAWE if you regularly make large edits. Check that the version you install supports your server, and make a backup before changing a live world.
Upload the schematic to the server
Use the file that matches your server's Minecraft version. WorldEdit's default schematics folder on Bukkit, Spigot and Paper is plugins/WorldEdit/schematics. Subfolders work with a folder/file name in the command. FAWE's docs do not specify a folder path, so check the folder it creates after its first start instead of assuming it uses WorldEdit's path.
Use SFTP to upload the schematic into the appropriate schematics folder. For WorldEdit, use plugins/WorldEdit/schematics. For FAWE, start it once and check the folder it creates. If you have just installed FAWE, restart the server to generate its configuration and folders.
Open the File Manager and upload the schematic into plugins/WorldEdit/schematics if using WorldEdit. For FAWE, start it once and inspect the folders it creates. If you have just installed FAWE, restart from the Console so it can generate its configuration and folders.
Open Files / FTP and upload the schematic into plugins/WorldEdit/schematics if using WorldEdit. For FAWE, start it once and inspect the folders it creates. If you have just installed FAWE, restart from the console so it can generate its configuration and folders.
Then join the server as a player with the needed permissions. Schematic loading and pasting use a player's clipboard, so do not try to run these commands from the server console.
Load the file and paste it where you want it
Stand where you want the build positioned, then load the schematic and paste it. WorldEdit loads the file into your clipboard first. The paste is placed relative to where you stand, using the position the clipboard was copied from as its reference.
//schem load lobby.schem
//pasteReplace lobby.schem with the file name you uploaded. WorldEdit also accepts /schematic load <schematic> [format]; /schem and //schem are aliases. You can use /schem list to see files it recognizes and /schem formats to check supported formats.
Before a large paste, check your position and the schematic orientation. The -a flag skips air blocks from the clipboard, which is useful when you want to keep existing terrain or structures above or around the build.
//paste -aUse //rotate 90 after loading and before pasting to turn the clipboard a quarter turn around the vertical axis. Rotation uses 90 degree steps. //flip mirrors the clipboard. Both commands affect the loaded clipboard, so load the schematic again if you need to start over with its original orientation.
Fix a schematic that will not load or pastes incorrectly
- The file does not appear: check the folder, spelling and extension, then run
/schem list. With FAWE, inspect the folder it created rather than assuming WorldEdit's default path. - The command is denied: ask an administrator to check permissions. Loading needs
worldedit.schematic.loadandworldedit.clipboard.load; pasting needsworldedit.clipboard.paste. - The paste is in the wrong place: stand at the intended position before pasting. Check the orientation, load again if needed, and rotate the clipboard before the next paste.
- The paste removes nearby blocks: use
//paste -ato skip air blocks in the schematic. - The build or plugin is for another version: match the schematic to your server version and check the WorldEdit or FAWE listing for a compatible plugin build. WorldEdit needs a version-specific adapter for each Minecraft release on Bukkit based servers.
For a lobby example, our team made Imperial Lobby | Japanese Themed, an approximately 80 by 80 minigame lobby with 11 NPC slots, three crate areas and leaderboard space. The listing includes schematics for versions 1.8 through 1.21.11 and requires WorldEdit or FAWE.
Once the build is in place, plan its player routes and signs with our lobby design guide, then protect the area using the steps in our WorldGuard safe zones guide.
Undo a bad paste safely
If the paste is still in your WorldEdit history, run //undo as the player who made it. //redo restores an undone action. History is kept per player session and is limited to the last 15 actions by default, so do not rely on it after a server restart. It also records direct WorldEdit changes only, so later effects such as flowing water or blocks popping off may not be reversed.
Our server backup guide covers keeping and restoring copies. If the server has restarted since the paste, do not count on the session history being available; restore from a backup if the world needs a full rollback.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I put a WorldEdit schematic on a Paper server?
The default Bukkit, Spigot and Paper folder is plugins/WorldEdit/schematics. Upload the file there, then use /schem list to check that WorldEdit sees it.
Why does //schem load not find my file?
Check the file name, extension and schematics folder, then run /schem list and /schem formats. If you use FAWE, inspect the folder it created after first start because its documentation does not specify a folder path.
Can I undo a schematic paste after restarting the server?
WorldEdit history is kept per player session and is limited, so do not rely on it after a restart. Before a live paste, keep a backup you can restore if undo is no longer available or does not reverse later changes.
Do I need FastAsyncWorldEdit to paste a schematic?
No. WorldEdit supports loading and pasting schematics. FAWE is an alternative focused on faster edits and lower memory use, and its installation guide says not to install WorldEdit alongside it.
